FAQ: Laptop Loan Service
General Information
Is there a cost for this service?
No. This service is free of charge to SCS graduate students, faculty and staff.
What happens if I need the laptop for more than 2 weeks?
It is possible to extend a loan on a case by case basis. When we provide a loner laptop as part of a supported machine repair, we can provide an automatic extension if needed. Otherwise, existing scheduled loans, inventory availability and other factors determine an extension approval.
I'm an undergrad or not an SCS student, can I request a loaner laptop?
For undergrads or non-SCS students, a sponsor is required and the loan is essentially the responsibility of that sponsor (if not returned). If unable to secure a sponsor, the CS Pathways Laptop Loaner Program may be another alternative.
Can I request a loan for a specific date?
Yes. You can request with a scheduled pick-up and return date.
Is there a cost if the laptop is lost or damaged?
Yes. Full replacement cost of current comparable replacement or cost of repair (parts). This includes returns missing the charger.
Can I get a loaner without a reservation?
Yes, but it is subject to availability. Approved and scheduled requests will be honored on a first come, first serve basis. You can stop by the SCS Help Desk at the 4th floor of the Gates Hillman Centers, room 4203 to check availability.
Can I request a specific type of computer?
Yes. You can choose between Apple Macbook Pro or Dell Lattitude laptops.
Can I get a laptop with a GPU?
Not at this time.
What happens to my data after use?
All loaners are wiped (and reimaged) immediately upon return. It is the customer’s responsibility to protect/remove data from the laptop when done.
Do you have Linux OS laptops available?
Not at this time.
Are printers and additional software (Office, Crashplan, Crowdstrike), reloaded for me?
Yes! Our laptops are preloaded with a software and configuration store that allows you to configure printers accordingly. In addition, all of our loaners have Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Crowdstrike and Crashplan backup software preloaded. Andrew (campus) printing is not preloaded by default, but you can install it.
Can I take my loaner laptop for travel (such as China)?
Yes! You can travel with our loaner laptop. From a security perspective, we encourage travel to countries like China with a neutral, clean (data) laptop without your personal work stored on it. We also encourage you to use VPN connection when working remotely from anywhere.
Can I use my own Apple ID on a loner Macbook Pro?
You can, but we require sign-out before returning it as an active Apple ID on the laptop may create issues.
Will these work with AV equipment in SCS rooms and spaces?
Yes, these laptops have been tested for use with our standard AV equipment in SCS conference/meeting rooms.
