SCS Computing Facilities Collaboration Roles
We welcome collaborative partnerships with departments and groups across services, systems and platforms. These special collaborators are provided with appropriate access and tools to streamline cooperative work, in some cases leading to deep integration into our teams. Over the course of piloting these kinds of collaborative projects, we have identified and formalized these roles within SCS Computing's own permission structure.
General Customers
SCSCF customers are members of the SCS community who use SCSCF-managed or maintained platforms and services, own computing equipment enrolled in SCSCF supported services. Some examples include printing, AFS, cluster users, Linux time shares and web CMS among others.
Privileges:
- Privileged access to their own equipment.
- Authority to request changes to services, platforms, and access controls (logins) on own equipment.
- Machine rooms - supervised access to own equipment.
Responsibilities:
We expect people in this role to understand the scope of the services they're subscribed to and to review their support costs on a regular basis. We also SCSCF Customers to be responsive when we try to contact them.
Approval Process:
Any member of the SCS community (not affiliates), can be a customer.
Trusted Department Administrators
Trusted administrators are generally granted privileged access to resources owned by their departments or labs, when required, on a case by case basis. We do not seek prior authorization for these access requests (we do verify authorization after the fact though).
Privileges:
- Direct communication with relevant SCSCF teams.
- Viewer access to internal computer hardware information database (RAMS).
- Privileged access to department or lab equipment.
- Privileged access to appropriate resources (as identified by service owner/manager).
- Authority to request changes to services, platforms, and access (login) to department or lab equipment.
- Unsupervised access to department, lab or own hosted equipment in our datacenters (machine rooms).
- SCS Procurement application viewer access.
- Included on fac-staff mailing lists
Responsibilities:
Trusted Department Administrators (TDA) can receive any services for which their computers are subscribed. TDAs can directly perform maintenance tasks, regardless of the existing support levels on their equipment. For unsupported applications or system configurations; SCSCF may provide guidance or consult with the TDA (at management's discretion) but SCSCF will not provide direct configuration support and maintenance.
Partners
Members of this group are integrated into existing teams in SCSCF and perform privileged administrative tasks for their departments/labs only. They report directly to a manager in SCSCF for task assignments, prioritization of effort, and performance feedback. They are expected to follow all policies and procedures that are expected from a regular staff member in SCSCF.
People in this role may take on work that is outside of the scope of regular tasks for members of SCSCF. They may also perform administrative tasks on unsupported equipment belonging to their departments or labs. They are not expected to work on equipment that is not owned by their department (or lab).
With prior agreement (with their departments or labs), partners may provide direct support, for limited time periods, for equipment that normally falls outside of their areas of responsibility. Partners are expected to participate in technical mentoring, training, and consulting activities with other members of SCSCF.
Privileges:
- Direct communication with team and SCSCF org level channels.
- Editor access to internal computer hardware information database (RAMS).
- Privileged access to department or lab equipment and resources.
- Authority to request changes to services, platforms, and access (login) to department or lab equipment.
- Unsupervised access to department, lab or own hosted equipment in our datacenters (machine rooms).
- Access to relevant team ServiceNow ticketing system assignment group, team membership.
- Access to all datacenters (machine rooms).
Expectations:
- Attend all relevant team and org level meetings.
- Participate in regular one-on-one meetings with SCSCF manager.
- Privileged access to all department (or lab) level resources.
- Must complete SCSCF security training.
- Must sign SCSCF Confidentiality Agreement (annually)
Responsibilities:
Partner responsibilities includes providing system administration support for their department's machines. This could be all the machines or a specific list of machines specified and agreed upon by the department and SCSCF. Some key responsibilities can include system maintenance, troubleshooting the operating system, end user support and issue resolution.
Integrated Partners
Integrated Partners are fully integrated with SCSCF. They may be partially funded by an external organization (typically a lab or department) or assigned as a dedicated resource to/from an external partner. People in this role report directly to a manager within SCSCF for task assignments, prioritization of effort, and performance feedback. They are expected to follow all policies and procedures that are expected from a regular staff member in SCSCF.
People in this role may take on work that is outside of the scope of regular tasks for members of SCSCF. They may also perform administrative tasks on unsupported equipment belonging to their departments or labs. This role will work on supported equipment as assigned, regardless of ownership.
Partners are expected to participate in technical mentoring, training, and consulting activities with other members of SCSCF.
Privileges:
- Direct communication with SCSCF organization including their team.
- Internal computer hardware information database access.
- Administrative privileges (relevant to role) on all equipment supported by team.
- Access to administrative tools relevant to role such as LOM, SII VPN segments, JAMF, Intune, AD, GPUT, global k5login, etc.
- Privileged access to department or lab equipment.
- Authority to request changes to services, platforms, and access (login) to department or lab equipment.
- Unsupervised access to department, lab or own hosted equipment in our datacenters (machine rooms).
Responsibilities:
A Fully Integrated Partner has the same responsibilities as a SCSCF staff member. They are responsible for supporting all machines covered under software and/or hardware support.
External Partners
External Partners are people who may be partially embedded within SCSCF and who report directly to teams/managers outside of SCSCF. They may be granted elevated privileges, at a service owner or SCSCF manager’s discretion, in order to provide services and complete appropriate tasks.
Privileges:
- Direct communication with SCSCF organization including their team.
- Internal computer hardware information database access.
- Administrative privileges (relevant to role) on all equipment supported by team.
- Privileged access to appropriate resources (as identified by service owner/manager).
- Privileged access to department or lab equipment.
- Authority to request changes to services, platforms, and access (login) to department or lab equipment.
- Unsupervised access to department, lab or own hosted equipment in our datacenters (machine rooms).
Responsibilities:
A Fully Integrated Partner has the same responsibilities as a SCSCF staff member. They are responsible for supporting all machines covered under software and/or hardware support.
